About Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum is a New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter remembered for an aggressive right-handed style and an attacking approach to leadership. The ICC's 2015 World Cup profile described him as the Black Caps skipper and highlighted his willingness to attack from the opening ball.

Born in Dunedin on 27 September 1981, McCullum made his ODI debut against Australia in 2002 and his Test debut against South Africa in 2004. New Zealand Cricket records that he initially entered Test cricket at number eight and later became a central figure in the national side.

McCullum combined wicketkeeping with batting across the order, and ESPNcricinfo lists his playing role as wicketkeeper-batter, right-hand batting and right-arm medium or offbreak bowling. New Zealand Cricket notes that he was the first New Zealander to score a Test triple-century, making 302 against India in Wellington in 2014.

As New Zealand captain, McCullum led with an unusually attacking fielding and batting strategy. Under his captaincy, New Zealand reached its first men's World Cup final in 2015, while the official New Zealand Cricket account also records a sustained unbeaten home-Test run during his tenure.

His 2015 recognition was specifically for the spirit in which he led and played. New Zealand Cricket says the ICC cited his humility and exemplary sportsmanship, including his invitation to A.B. de Villiers and South Africa into New Zealand's dressing room after the World Cup semi-final. McCullum's international playing career ended in 2016 after 100 consecutive Tests from debut, a historical record noted by New Zealand Cricket. This fair play profile keeps the award's official name—ICC Spirit of Cricket Award—rather than treating it as the IPL's team prize.
