About Daryl Mitchell

Daryl Mitchell is a New Zealand batting all-rounder who combines right-handed batting with right-arm medium bowling. The ICC lists him as an all-rounder, while Canterbury Cricket describes him as a right-hand batter and right-arm medium-fast bowler.

Born in Hamilton on 20 May 1991, Mitchell made his first-class debut for Northern Districts in the 2011–12 season. ESPNcricinfo records his international career beginning in 2019 and identifies him as the son of former New Zealand rugby union player and coach John Mitchell.

He made an immediate impression on Test debut against England in Hamilton in November 2019, scoring 73. Canterbury Cricket also records that debut innings and describes his move to Canterbury after a successful Northern Districts career.

Mitchell became a key part of New Zealand’s white-ball teams at the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After being promoted to open, he made an unbeaten 72 against England in the semi-final as New Zealand reached the final, according to ESPNcricinfo.

His most relevant fair-play distinction came in that same semi-final. After he collided with England bowler Adil Rashid while Rashid attempted to stop Jimmy Neesham's shot, Mitchell declined a possible single because he felt he had obstructed the bowler, even though New Zealand needed 34 runs from the last three overs. The ICC named him the 2021 Spirit of Cricket Award winner in recognition of the decision. This fair play profile keeps the award's official name—ICC Spirit of Cricket Award—rather than treating it as the IPL's team prize.
