Born on 27 November 1986 in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Raina made his ODI debut for India in 2005 and later became a regular part of India's limited-overs middle order. Cricbuzz records his birth date and place and the 30 July 2005 ODI debut.

The IPL Fair Play Award was a team achievement. Sportstar explains that it goes after each season to the team with the best fair-play record, based on points awarded by umpires, and its year-wise list names Gujarat Lions as the 2017 winner. Raina captained the award-winning team; he was not an individual award recipient.
